Draughts problem #523

HardLight · win in 5

Setting up the board…

Light plays now and can force the opponent out of pieces or moves within 5 turns.

Goal
win in 5

On the board: 2 men and 1 kings for Dark, 1 men and 3 kings for Light. A long forcing line of four or five moves. Kings and tempo count more than material here.

What to look for

  • Crowning a man is part of the solution.
  • Kings are on the board and their freedom to move backwards matters.

How the answer is checked

There is exactly one first move that forces the result; any other first move allows the defence to escape. Moves that keep the forced result are accepted later in the line, and a move that loses it is taken back with a short note.

Show the key move

The key move is 12x3. The main line runs: 12x3 · 7-11 · 3-7 · 4-8 · 7x16 · 8-3 · 16-12 · 3-7 · 2x11.
